Begin with the End in Mind

You are Here
Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?

The Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.

Alice: I don’t much care where.

The Cat: Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.

Alice: …so long as I get somewhere.

The Cat: Oh, you’re sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.

— Lewis Carroll from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Everything begins with goal setting. It’s the most funadmental thing every one talks about, and I don’t just mean self-help gurus.

I mean, from running a successful campaign, to running a successful business.

But what does that really mean?

Stephen Covey ‘s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change defines beginning with the end in mind as having an understanding about where you want to go, and from that having a clearer picture of where you are now and how far you have to go to reach your goal.

Yeah, but what does that mean?

If you’re like Alice, or like me for that matter, its very much like your wandering around aimlessly, going places but with nowhere to really go. The places you get to might be interesting but in the end, you end up thinking these were not places you wanted to be in.

Frankly, it’s not a fun feeling.

In plain speak, ‘Beginning with the End in Mind’ is taking inventory about where you are right now, and by figuring out what you want to happen then you can map out how to get there.

So here it is, I’ve had my Lightning Strike moment two years ago, I know I want to be in the Tech Industry and I find myself very fascinated with Experience Design, I even had plans to learn from it but I didn’t really follow through on it because of time constraints.

I’m still fascinated, deeply fascinated with Experience Design but at the moment, and after a lot of soul searching I’ve come to the realization its only a portion of what I’m interested in.

Stop me if you know where I’m going with this and if you’ve read my thoughts on Startups you definitely know where I’m going.

Considering everything, with 2014 well underway this is my goal, my commitment.

In 90 days I will launch a business.

I’m writing this down here not only to announce that intention but to keep me accountable to that goal.

A large part of this blog will be about chronicling my journey at starting a business, and sharing lessons I’ve learned from doing so with you.

Its learning by doing and hopefully you’re all learning with me.

What’s your goal for 2014? What do you resolve to do in 90 days? I’d love to hear from you!

Or if you like you can join my newsletter and get up to date on my musings and thoughts through this journey.
